What is the basis for forgiveness? A better question is this: WHO is the ultimate source of forgiveness? It is vitally important that we start at the right place.
God is the ultimate source of forgiveness. Why? Because God is morally perfect. He is sinless, blameless, and altogether perfect. That is why His primary attribute is His Holiness. So, when we sin, we ultimately sin against God. David wrote, “Against Thee, Thee only, I have sinned, and done what is evil in thy sight, so that thou are justified when thou does speak, and blameless when thou doesn’t judge. Ps 51:4.
Didn’t David sin against Uriah and Bathsheba? YES. But they did not establish the moral code that man lives under. God established the mortal boundaries based on His Holiness. That is why when we sin, we ultimately sin against the one who established the Law and enforces the Law – God!
When the ultimate Judge forgives, there is “no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Romans 8:1. Self-guilt is really rooted in an inflated view of self. The greater my view of God and His holiness, the lesser my view of my self-evaluation!!!
Acts 2:38 “Repent, and let each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
