The Agenda

Let’s get on the same page! Are you on the same page as the Lord? What is the greatest hindrance from being there? The disciples paint a great picture of the challenge. After talking to them about the Kingdom of God for 40 days and just prior to His ascension, the disciples asked, “Lord, is it at this time you are restoring the kingdom to Israel?” There you have it! Jesus talked about the Kingdom of God and their agenda was the kingdom of Israel. Let’s consider what skewed their agenda and relate it to our personal experience.

They had been taught from childhood that Messiah would restore the glory of Israel. He would conquer all enemies. However, they were wrong about the timing. We must guard our hearts against what we’ve always believed or been taught. A humble, teachable heart that listens to the Lord will help us in this area.

The disciples were in a challenging situation. Like children, we too often think that God’s plan revolves around us. While God does love you deeply and perfectly, His plan is bigger than your personal agenda. The early disciples continued to live under the empirical rule of Rome. They were oppressed and persecuted.

The disciples were honest in their expectation about God’s work but they were also willing to hear a word of correction from Christ. In the face of His stinging rebuke, He shared the great commission which they embraced. May our hearts be that correctable!

“So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, “Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority; but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”” Acts‬ ‭1:6-8‬ ‭NASB‬
