Believers are called to “build up” not “tear down.” Specifically, Romans 14 refers to how believers treat one another. Jesus taught us to pray for God’s Kingdom to come. What is the kingdom of God? “Righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.” It is impossible to experience the Kingdom while tearing down another believer. You are to “PURSUE”, seek after those things that “make for peace and building up one another.” We know that running down another believer does not promote peace. When someone criticizes you, I imagine peace isn’t something you immediately experience.
How do you build other believers up? Look for one thing that they are doing right and affirm them for it. Speak the truth about that person with a genuine heart of love. Today, determine that you will only say things to others and about others that build them up!
“For if because of food your brother is hurt, you are no longer walking according to love. Do not destroy with your food him for whom Christ died. Therefore do not let what is for you a good thing be spoken of as evil; for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. For he who in this way serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men. So then we pursue the things which make for peace and the building up of one another.” Romans 14:15-19 NASB
