The key to avoid legalism

How do you fulfill the many commandments in the New Testament? There are dozens in Romans 13. Add to that the other 26 books of the NT and you have hundreds of commandments. If we are not careful, we will fall into the legalistic trap that the Pharisees propagated.

So, how do we avoid becoming legalistic while fulfilling the many clear commandments in the NT? By understanding the way to obedience. Paul shares the key with us in Romans 13:9. “…Any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” You will obey all the commandments in the NT in your treatment of others by loving your neighbor as yourself!

“Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. For this, “YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, YOU SHALL NOT MURDER, YOU SHALL NOT STEAL, YOU SHALL NOT COVET,” and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, “YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.”” Romans‬ ‭13:8-9‬ ‭NASB‬‬
