Timeless truths about bragging. With all the debate about HOW a person is saved, Paul clarifies and settles for all time the very nature of salvation in Romans 4. The entire book is written to explain the Gospel.
Abraham is the perennial Patriarch of the Old Testament. How was he saved? He did nothing to earn salvation! He had nothing to “brag about.” He simply “believed God, and it was credited to him for righteousness.” He wasn’t saved once he followed the external sign of the covenant – circumcision. We are not saved today by following the sign of the covenant – baptism. There is nothing we can DO to add to salvation.
What do you need to believe? The second member of the Triune God left heaven, robed Himself in human flesh, lived a sinless life, shed His blood on a cross as payment for sin, died, rose from the dead three days later. That is the Gospel!
“If Abraham was justified by works, he has something to brag about — but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him for righteousness.” Romans 4:2-3 HCSB
