Timeless truth about religion. The most frightening words in the Bible are recorded in Matthew 7 when Jesus said, “Many will say to me on that day…” MANY will use religious acts and association as the reason they should get into heaven. Jesus will say to them, “Depart from me you workers of iniquity…” MANY are deceived into thinking that religion is the doorway into eternal life with God. It is not.
In describing the Gospel to the believers in Rome, Paul emphasizes this truth in Romans 2. The chapter is summarized in verses 28-29. The Jews thought that being a “Jew” and completing the religious act of “circumcision” was enough to secure their spot in heaven. Paul clarified that it was not!
“For a person is not a Jew who is one outwardly, and true circumcision is not something visible in the flesh. On the contrary, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly, and circumcision is of the heart — by the Spirit, not the letter. That man’s praise is not from men but from God.” Romans 2:28-29
What is the basis of your assurance for eternal life in heaven? Is it religious association? Religious acts? If so, you will find yourself among the “MANY” that Jesus will say, “Depart from me…” The only way into heaven is to have your heart changed by the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. That is only possible by trusting in Jesus Christ.
