Timeless truths about disobedience.
Jonah was called to carry God’s message to the Assyrians in Nineveh. We are called to carry God’s message to all people. Jonah disobeyed! There are always underlying reasons why we disobey God.
Jonah knew that God would be merciful and compassionate if the Ninevites repented. (See Jonah 4) Jonah thought correctly about God’s character. The Ninevites repented and God relented of His judgment. Why did Jonah initially disobey God? Because he didn’t like this part of God’s character. Our issue today with God’s character is not His compassion but rather His holiness. Jonah didn’t have a problem with God’s holiness, just His compassion.
Our obedience to God cannot be based on our likes and dislikes. A better way to say that is: our obedience to God is not based on our personal preferences. Too many times we want to create a “God” in our own image – one after our liking. God will have none of that. He is who He is. We are to obey Him period.
I mentioned earlier that we are called to carry God’s message to all people. Will you obey? Will you set aside your personal preferences and share God’s message with others?
