Timeless truths about godliness.
The Apostle Paul instructs Timothy to “pursue godliness” in 1 Timothy 6:11. Godliness does not just happen. When you were saved, you became the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. However, that is a positional stance before God in heaven. God began a good work in you and you are to join Him in that work, Philippians 2:12. What work? The work of sanctification. Romans 8:28-30 tells us that we are predestined to become like Jesus. That is the pursuit of godliness.
So, how do we pursue godliness? I have read some excellent books on the subject. Disciplines of a Godly Man by Kent Hughes is one of the best. Yet, there is one truth from 2 Peter we must remember. Peter simply states that God has given to us everything we need to live a life of godliness. What do we need? The divine power of God!! Our part is to depend on the Holy Spirit of God who is in us. We know that we cannot produce godliness. But we are to surrender to the control of the Holy Spirit who works in our spirits to conform us to the image of Christ. The “magic bullet” is not a prayer or a conference but a life that lived moment by moment in dependence upon the power of God.
“Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord; seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.” 2 Peter 1:2-3 NASB
