Timeless truths about winning others to the truth. Can a believer stray from the truth? James addresses believers when he says, “my brethren.” Then he says that “if any among you strays from the truth and one turns him back…” If we pause there we can clearly see that a born-again believer can stray “from the truth.” Do we stray from the truth? Absolutely. Even the Apostle Peter strayed from the truth when the Judaizers from Jerusalem came to Antioch. Peter stopped eating with the Gentiles and would only eat with the Jews. He was called out by Paul. By the way, notice that another believer is to turn him back to the truth! How does that happen? Certainly not by silence! It happens when we care enough about another Christian friend to lovingly challenge their departure from the truth. Thank God for friends like that!
Even more significant is the person who “turns a sinner from the error of his way.” Then a soul is saved and a “multitude” of sin is covered by the blood of Jesus. Again that does not happen by silence. It happens when we care enough about someone else to share the truth with them. We “save his soul from death…” Wow. When was the last time you saved a soul from death by sharing the Gospel?
“My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth and one turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.” James 5:19-20 NASB
