The full picture

Timeless truths about quoting the Bible. The great temptation for many of us is to quote half a verse. It is easy to quote only half a verse. But, half a verse is only half the picture. In dealing with the devil, often only half of James 4:7 is quoted, “Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” The key to resisting the devil is the first half of the verse, “Submit therefore to God.” So, when you submit to God you are in a position to resist the devil. The context makes it clear that to walk in victory we must not only submit to God and then resist the devil, but seek after God with a repentant heart full of humility. Today, submit to God as you seek an intimate relationship with Him. Resist the devil. Turn away from sin and and do not allow your heart to be divided.

“Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.” James‬ ‭4:7-10‬ ‭NASB‬‬
