Timeless truths about conflict. Few people enjoy conflict. Nations battle one another. People within a nation battle each other. Families, couples, siblings, etc. What is the source of all this conflict? Some would say it is the devil. James says the “source of quarrels and conflicts” lies within us. We seek pleasures and “lust and do not have…are envious” so we fight.
Normally during a conflict, we think about the other person. How wrong they are, what they did, what they said. It is wiser to begin with yourself. What is it about me and my desires that has contributed to this conflict? What is my goal and ambition? What would happen if I removed my desires and ego from the situation? Peace only flows from a heart that is at peace.
“What is the source of quarrels and conflicts among you? Is not the source your pleasures that wage war in your members? You lust and do not have; so you commit murder. You are envious and cannot obtain; so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures. You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” James 4:1-4 NASB
