Timeless truths about wisdom. Godly wisdom and ungodly “wisdom” are compared in James 3:13-18. “Earthly, natural, demonic” wisdom is characterized by jealousy, selfishness, disorder, and arrogance. Godly wisdom is characterized by purity, peacefulness, gentle, and reasonable (among other things). The question we must ask ourselves when we maintain that we have God’s wisdom is this: Do my decisions and actions facilitate peace? Are they gentle?
Many who claim to have God’s wisdom on a matter must look at the fruit of their lives. But then again, honest evaluation isn’t normally a part of someone who practices hypocrisy! Godly wisdom begins with humility and honesty. Demonic wisdom is haughty and deceitful. May God grant us the grace to see the evidence of God’s wisdom!
“Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth. This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy. And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.” James 3:13-18 NASB
