Self-deception

Timeless truths about self-deception. During my high school years, there was a man who roamed around town quite animated. He would have conversations with himself or people who were not there. I learned that drugs had something to do with his state. It was very sad.

James talks about an even sadder state of affairs. He mentions those who roam around life being deluded. They are self deceived; convinced of a false reality. They think that they are “righteous” because they listen to the Bible. They even enjoy listening! At times they get excited about listening! But they never change! The truth of what is share is never connected to the dots in their lives. They think they are “religious” when in fact, their “religion” is worthless. It is worse than worthless – it is a thick fog that clouds their soul from seeing the truth.

We are to put aside ALL filthiness. All the grave clothes are to be taken off. We are to humble ourselves so that our hearts are fertile and receptive to receive the “word.” Once the truth of God’s word is planted in the soil of a humble heart, life is produced. That life produces action. We become “doers of the word.”

“Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls. But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.” James‬ ‭1:21-22‬ ‭NASB‬‬
