Timeless truths about your forgiveness.
Forgiveness is the key to life and eternity. Only forgiven people will enter heaven. How exactly are you forgiven? God is perfect and cannot allow sin into heaven. All of us are sinful, no exceptions! Sin creates a debt (for the wages of sin is death, Romans 6:23) and we cannot pay the debt by our good deeds (our righteousness is as a filthy rag in God’s presence, Isaiah 64:6). That means not one person is qualified to enter heaven!
Before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1) the Trinity chose how mankind could be saved. Since man created the debt, man must pay. Since all fell in Adam, then all could be saved through a second Adam. So, Jesus Christ, the second member of the Trinity, became a man. He lived a perfect life, shed his blood on a cross, and died. His blood paid for our sin. The debt was settled. But we can only experience the appropriation of that payment through faith.
Colossians 2:13-15 teaches us that when Jesus died on the cross, all your sins were nailed to the cross. Then He disarmed the forces of darkness. When you repent of your sin, turn to Christ in faith, you are forgiven freely by the Lord. That forgiveness was not free! It cost Christ His life. His forgiveness is free to you – it is given to you freely! You are saved by grace through faith, Ephesians 2:8-9.
