Timeless truths from Philippians 3:17-19.
Everyone follows the example of someone. Paul encouraged others to follow his example. Then Paul describes the characteristics of those who are “enemies of the cross of Christ.”
Note first that he identifies them as enemies. Their opposition is to the cross of Christ. What does that mean? The cross signifies grace and holiness. It also reflects purpose and discipline. We are to take up our cross daily… meaning we are to deny ourselves and live in the power of Christ.
Those who are enemies of Christ are headed to hell. Their “end is destruction.” They worship their appetite. This isn’t referring to strictly an appetite for food. These people are dominated by their longings of their flesh.
They glory in the things that is disgraceful. Instead of being embarrassed by their sinfulness, they exalt it.
They are preoccupied with “earthly things.” Why? Because for them life is all about the here and now. There is no thought to eternity.
“Brethren, join in following my example, and observe those who walk according to the pattern you have in us. For many walk, of whom I often told you, and now tell you even weeping, that they are enemies of the cross of Christ, whose end is destruction, whose god is their appetite, and whose glory is in their shame, who set their minds on earthly things.” Philippians 3:17-19 NASB
