Timeless truths from Philippians 3:12.
“Nobody’s perfect!” We are all flawed, fallen humans. Those of us who put our faith in Christ have been purchased out of the slave market of sin. We are no longer slaves to sin. We have a new Master, Jesus.
But even the great Apostle Paul said he had not arrived at perfection! No one can in the fallen flesh. Paul made it clear. “I press on so that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus.” If Paul needed to press on, so do we.
Our tendency is to focus on our failures and our weaknesses rather than our goal and potential. We can write off our disobedience by saying, “Nobody’s perfect.” Or we can press on. What are we seeking to “lay hold of”? What was Christ’s purpose of laying hold of us?
What does Paul mean by “lay hold of?” That means you now belong to God. He put His hand on you and you are His.
What is His purpose? Go back to the first two Chapters of Philippians. Jesus began a good work in us, chapter 1. We are to work out what God worked in, chapter 2. So, we were laid hold of by Jesus so that His work of redemption in us would become evident through us. We are to become what we are! We must avoid the trap of blaming and excusing our sin. We are to set our sights on becoming who God has created us to be and is at work in us to accomplish that very thing.
“Not that I have already obtained it or have already become perfect, but I press on so that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:12 NASB
