Timeless truths from Philippians 2:22-24.
In the highest form of compliment possible, Paul said that Timothy served him “in the furtherance of the gospel like a child serving his father.” Through the years, I’ve seen a number of grown children serve their elderly parent. It is a blessing to watch. It is an honor for the child and a blessing to the parent. Even in our hardened society, people still find that respectful.
Timothy’s excellent spirit of service is motivating and insightful. He served first and foremost the “furtherance of the gospel.” We do not know how many accused Timothy of being “teacher’s pet” or other demeaning things. But we do know that those who are petty are not lifted up as examples for millenniums to follow. Timothy was a servant who was sincere. He sacrificed himself for the sake of the Gospel that was furthered by serving Paul. It appeared Timothy was serving a man. And that may be true at first glance. But a deeper look reveals he was serving the Kingdom of God! Who are you serving?
“But you know of his proven worth, that he served with me in the furtherance of the gospel like a child serving his father. Therefore I hope to send him immediately, as soon as I see how things go with me; and I trust in the Lord that I myself also will be coming shortly.” Philippians 2:22-24 NASB
