Timeless truths from Philippians 1:17-28.
Does your conduct matter to God? Absolutely! The commandment is “conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ…” Our lifestyle is to be “worthy of the gospel.” How so? At the heart of the gospel is a change of the heart. How can we possibly proclaim a gospel that transforms the heart when there is no evidence of change?
What is the evidence of a transformed heart? Paul follows the command with characteristics of those transformed by the gospel of Jesus Christ. First, “standing firm in one spirit.” That has to do with the evidence of our unity. We stand together! We stand our ground against the enemies of darkness and we do so unified. Second, “with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel.” We live seeking the mind of Christ, striving to share the gospel. Our opinions may differ, but our minds are together on what is important. Third, “in no way alarmed by your opponents…” We live with an abiding peace. We are not anxious or worried. We are confident and assured. We know who sits on the Throne.
That kind of unity in our conduct is a sign to the unbeliever that they are condemned!Jesus prayed that we would be “one” as He and the Father are one – so that the world would know that HE is alive in us. Maybe that is why the church in America is so ineffective! Maybe we are not conducting ourselves in a manner “worthy of the gospel of Christ.”
“Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel; in no way alarmed by your opponents-which is a sign of destruction for them, but of salvation for you, and that too, from God.” Philippians 1:27-28 NASB
