Timeless truths from Philippians 1:9-10.
Choices. Decisions. We either are making the initial choice or deciding how to respond to the choice of someone else. How do we make better choices?
Paul teaches us that we can make “excellent” choices. Let’s start there and back up in the verse. “Excellent” means a superior choice. We can make good, better, or the best choice. The best choice is characterized as “excellent.” How?
“Discernment” is a key. We utilize judgment. We discriminate against the good or better for the best. We base that discernment upon real knowledge. Not fairy tale beliefs or fantasy thinking but facts. It appears that some people in our culture want to deny clear facts because they would rather believe otherwise. That is not even a good choice. We exercise discernment based on facts that are thoroughly investigated. We ask a lot of questions and listen to reliable sources!
Now that we have backed up in the verse, we get to the beginning- love. Love is willing to face the facts and then discern what is best! Love is not some silly sentiment or blind emotion. Love is genuine and transparent because it is rooted in truth (real knowledge) and wisdom (discernment).
That is the formula for making the best decisions! The formula is saturated in prayer.
“And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ;” Philippians 1:9-10 NASB
