Timeless truths from John 15:1-2.
God’s plan and purpose is that you produce fruit. He uses trials to prune you. The goal: “so that it will produce more fruit.” It is important that we understand the meaning of fruit. The context makes it clear that this fruit is not naturally produced! There’s a lot we can do in our flesh that appears to be fruit. But the fruit to which Jesus refers is only produced when we “abide” in Him.
We know that there are nine fruit of the Spirit. Galatians 5 identifies them. So it is safe to say that Jesus must be talking about the nine fruit of the Spirit. He talks about producing fruit 100 fold. How can nine fruit (yes it is singular because it is really one fruit that is manifested nine ways) produce 100 fold? The first fruit identified in Galatians 5 is “love.” Love can produce hundreds of thousands of acts of sacrifice!
Remember we must always keep a passage in context. Jesus talks about fruit in verses 1-8 and then beginning in verse 9 He talks about love. Again, love is the first fruit of the Spirit.
We can only bear fruit as we walk in the power of the Holy Spirit. Throughout today, moment by moment, live in total dependence upon the Holy Spirit. He will empower you to produce the fruit God purposed for you to bear.
““I am the true vine, and My Father is the vineyard keeper. Every branch in Me that does not produce fruit He removes, and He prunes every branch that produces fruit so that it will produce more fruit.” John 15:1-2 HCSB
